Touristy Vuno

July 1, 2010

Vuno is one of the most interesting villages of the Albanian Riviera, positioned between Dhërmi and Himara, only 2 kilometers away from the wonderful Jala beach. Houses built in stone and cobble stone, narrow streets which are characteristic for this area create a nice complex with the green scenery of the olive trees and the mountain on which the village is situated. Vuno has approximately 200 houses, but only a few of them are inhabited during most of the year. A limited number of habitants (around 40 families), mainly elders live in the village throughout the year, while the majority of the villagers have left and moved to cities or other countries.

The cave of pellumbas
March 15, 2009

The cave of Pëllumbas, also known as The Black cave, is valued by specialists as one of the most precious archeological sites of Albania. In this cave there were found skeletons, which according to the confirmation of the Museum of Natural Sciences of Florence University, belong to cave bears (Ursus Speleaus), that lived from 10.000 to 400.000 years ago. Different from similar European caves, the Cave of Pëllumbas has also remnants of human culture, which according to the confirmation of Tirana Archaeological Institute belong to the period of Paleolit in Ancient Middle Ages. The cave is about 360 m long, 10 – 15 m wide and 15 – 45 m high, filled with beautiful stalactites and stalagmites.

Church of Saint Mary
Friday, November 28, 2008

Saint Mary Church, one of the oldest churches in the Ionian coast, is situated in the southern part of the village of Vuno, above the national road that connects Vlora and Himara. We lack information on the exact age of the building but a documented restoration of the church on 1782 makes us believe that it belongs to the beginning of the 18th century or earlier. The frescos on the walls of the church, although severely damaged during the years, still conserve the vividness of the colors and their originality, which gives a great value to this special little church.
